5 Signs of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is a gradual process that leads to cavities. It happens because bacteria found in plaque

(a clear material located  on the teeth and gums) reacts with sugars found in your saliva after eating. This reaction forms acid in the mouth that attacks the enamel eventually leading to a cavity. With 31% of adults currently having tooth decay and 31% of children starting primary school having noticeable tooth decay (source: NHS), there is clearly a problem in the UK.

The signs

It can be hard to tell if you have tooth decay in the early stages as the process works insidiously over time. To help you detect tooth decay there are five main signs to look out for.

Toothache

Toothache is pain around the teeth and jaw areas.  It is caused by dental caries (tooth decay).

Toothache can range from slight discomfort to a severe sharp pain accompanied with a throbbing headache.

Until you go to see your dentist takes over the counter pain killers to sooth the pain.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity or dentine hypersensitivity is when the nerves inside your teeth have a heightened reaction to environmental factors. This can be in the form of shooting pains and an intense stabbing pain.

The teeth become especially sensitive to hot, cold and sweet drinks and foods.

Bad Breath

Bad breath or halitosis is when an unpleasant smell comes from your mouth. This can be embarrassing and uncomfortable for both the person and the people around you.

Bad breathe can usually can be eradicated with good oral hygiene unless decay is present.

Unpleasant Tastebad breath

Do you find you are constantly brushing and reaching for the mouthwash, but still have that nasty taste lingering in your mouth?

This is one of the most obvious signals of tooth decay. Rather than being in increments (i.e. tooth sensitivity when eating ice cream) the lingering taste is constant and usually gets people running straight to the dentists for a solution.

Discolouring Spots

If you notice that you have black, brown or grey spots on your teeth you could have tooth decay. The staining could also be signs of other problems such as trauma, damage and staining.

Either way you need to see your dentist as soon as possible for treatment (or a scale and polish for tea and coffee stains).

If you are worried about tooth decay or just need a general check-up do not hesitate to contact us.

What sporting activities can you wear your Invisalign with?

People who have chosen to go with Invisalign treatment may have some trepidation about playing sports. Will my Invisalign fall out? Will it break? Can I wear a gum shield? These are questions that people regularly ask themselves.

Below are some points to keep in mind so you can stay active without worrying about your aligners.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to a metal brace. Instead of altering the aesthetics of your smile, Invisalign works with removable clear aligners that are practically invisible to the naked eye. The treatment is popular among teenagers and adults who want to retain a metal free smile without judgement from their peers or colleagues.

What sports can I play with Invisalign in?

Different sports have different intensities, contact levels and risks to the mouth.  Each sport has to be evaluated by the athlete to see whether they should keep their trays in. Below is a rough guide to help you make those decisions.

With Invisalign fitting so well there is little chance of the aligner dropping out if you take a bump or knock in sports like football or basketball. Feel free to keep your aligners in when playing sports with little contact such as:

  • Football
  • Tennis
  • Athletics
  • Basketball
  • Cycling
  • Gymnastics

Full contact sports bring new challenges when wearing aligners. Any forceful impact to the mouth could damage your aligner costing you money and setting your treatment back. Most sports that have high impact risks like boxing or wrestling usually require a gum shield.  If a mouth guard is required simply remove your aligners and place into your tray while you are competing. Trade your Invisalign with a gum shield in sports such as:

  • Boxing
  • Rugby
  • Wrestling
  • Martial Arts
  • Polo
  • Hockey

As long as you are sensible and weigh the risks appropriately your Invisalign should not get in the way of you participating in sports. If you are ever in doubt, remove your Invisalign to be on the safe side.

Can a loose tooth be fixed?

Having a loose adult tooth can be a worrying situation. The most common causes of loose teeth are trauma to the mouth and gum disease.

Trauma

If you suffered a loose tooth from trauma to the mouth you have two options.

Firstly if a major impact has occurred to the jaw from boxing, rugby, a car accident etc. then you should go to your dentist immediately. An assessment needs to be made on the tooth to see if any nerve damage has occurred. Trauma to the mouth can also cause chips and cracks that can be addressed by your dentist.

Secondly if the trauma was light and the tooth is slightly wobbly then you may want to wait two weeks. Teeth naturally tighten themselves back up over a short period of time. If the affected tooth does not firm -up itself then you need to make an appointment at your dentist for an examination.

Gum disease

Regular hygiene appointments will decrease the likelihood of your teeth getting loose. This way the dentist can keep your oral hygiene in check and warn you of any signs of gum disease. If you have contracted periodontal disease your tooth may not just go loose but fall out. Look out for the signs of gum disease below:

  • Swollen gums.
  • Red colouring of the gum.
  • White colouring of the gum.
  • Bleeding gums.
  • Gum abscesses or pus that collects under your gum.

Apart from preventing loose teeth with good oral hygiene, your tooth could possibly be re-set if it becomes wobbly. One way this can be done is by using a splint to secure loose teeth. The method consists of tethering the dislodging tooth to a neighbouring anchored tooth by using a strong adhesive resin.

After the procedure the joined teeth will need extra attention and inspection when brushing and flossing.

In any case, If in doubt- speak to your dentist.

How Invisalign Invisible Braces Work

This patient has crooked teeth and a protruding front tooth.

Invisalign® can straighten the teeth and improve this smile.

How does Invisalign?

After examination by your dental practitioner, impressions are taken of your teeth.

Impression trays are filled with impression material and then placed over your teeth.

Once set, the impression trays are carefully removed.

Your impressions and dental records are sent to Invisalign.

The impressions are used to create a digital model of your teeth.

Based on your dental practitioner’s treatment plan, the Invisalign software plans the movement of your teeth from their current position to the final desired position allowing you to see how your teeth may look after treatment.

Once your 3D treatment plan (ClinCheck ® treatment plan) is approved by you and your dental practitioner, a series of nearly invisible aligners are custom made for you.  The aligners follow the stages of the treatment plan.

You place the aligners over your teeth, where they fit snugly, as well as being nearly invisible they are comfortable and can be removed for eating, drinking and cleaning.

Every 2 weeks you switch to the next set of aligners.

Each aligner moves your teeth stage by stage, little by little.

Resulting in a straight and healthy smile.
